Director's Notes

What Band(s) Are Open To Freshmen?

Our directors highly recommend that ALL incoming freshmen participate in the Marching Band.  Practices begin on August 6 and the season lasts through mid-October.  With a planned return trip to Nashville, Tennessee, the band hopes to defend its 2000 Vanderbilt University Invitational title!
North's Marching Band prides itself on its musicality and will
perform for some 50,000 people over the course of the fall season.
Returning drum majors Roddy Theobald (TN alum) and Hillary
Elmore (St. Charles alum) will serve as conductors.  North's current crop of juniors are outstanding musicians and role models who will "adopt" the incoming freshmen.  It is really a "guarantee" that, if your son or daughter tries Marching Band their freshman year, they will love it!   Marching Band gets them involved in high school in a most positive manner, teaches them responsibility, and instills that very important quality of commitment. Besides, it is great fun!

No matter WHAT students already have registered for on their
schedules, it is still not too late to consider Marching Band.  It meets 2 nights per week beginning in the fall and students receive a grade and .5 credit.  At most high schools across the country, Marching Band IS the daily band course for ALL high school musicians in the fall semester.  We strive to be a bit more innovative here at North.  The juniors and seniors REALLY don't need to be practicing their Marching Band music during class all fall long.  With the
advancements of Colorguard and Percussion, it would take WAY too long to prepare for some type of rehearsal during the regular school day.  Two nights per week seems to work well for most
families (we encourage car-pooling), as students learn to BUDGET their time.  Most of our Marching Band members carry heavy academic loads and are Honor students at North.

We want ALL 8th graders to come over to the orientation night on May 7.  Bring your instrument, wear tennis shoes, and be
prepared to experience something totally AWESOME.

For students' curricular band course, freshmen should be enrolled in Concert, Advanced Concert, or Beginning Jazz Bands.  These bands do very minimal performances and will closely model what your son or daughter has experienced in Middle School, only at a higher level.  To be placed in the Intermediate Jazz or Wind
Ensemble, students must arrange for an audition with

Band Booster Dues
Each year, the Band Boosters ask parents to pay $10 per family in
Booster dues.  These dues go toward covering the cost of producing and mailing the newsletter, as well as other office expenses.  The dues are not required; you are a Band Booster simply by the fact that you have a
student in the Band Program.  But if you have a "ten spot" to spare, please mail it to: Martha Zuppann, 3517 Longview Ave, 47408.

Or just have your daughter or son drop it off in the Band Office.

Thanks for your help and support.
