North Hires Dynamic New Drumline Instructor!

Mr. Patrick McGowan has been hired recently to teach the Marching
Band Drumline.  His credentials are a mile long and would impress even
Wall Street.  The "cool" thing is that he is really excited about working
with the young men and women at North who want to learn about
percussion.
Currently, Patrick is nearing the end of his pursuit of a Masters'
degree in Business from Indiana University.  He has instructed several
drum corps, including the World Champion Cavaliers.  The drumline is
meeting Tuesday nights from 7:00 - 9:00 pm in the North Band room up
through May 8.  If your son or daughter wants to be in the drumline, just
simply ATTEND!  Patrick is most welcoming and we are still looking for a
few more drummers.
Practices for the Pit Percussion section will begin on Wednesday
night, March 28 and continue through Wednesday, May 9.  The Pit
Percussion is a special group of 10 - 12 student musicians who are instructed on the mallet instruments (marimba, vibes, xylophone), timpani, and other miscellaneous percussion.  These students stand in a stationary position, but must become a finely tuned part of the total Marching Band.  There are many openings for incoming freshmen, so please come out and stay some Wednesday night (7:00 - 9:00 p.m.) or give Ms. Stockhouse a phone call if you have further questions regarding this area (330-7724).  IU percussion major, Mary Boyadjian, is the instructor for next fall's Pit Percussion. She also will be North's student teacher in the Spring of 2002.  Welcome, Mary.

Vanderbilt Patches Available

Attention students and parents!  If you were in the North Marching
Band this past fall and would like to have a VMI 2000 Grand Champion Patch for your letter jacket or whatever, please bring $8 to the North Band Office by April 10.  Mr. Damron will be placing a group order for these patches, which we plan to have available at the Band Awards
Dessert.  Cash or check is fine (checks payable to Bloomington North Bands).  More later.

Pepsi Band Notes
Our final total for Pepsi Band Notes was 9,829!  They have been sent to and received by Pepsi. We are waiting on confirmation of our total and a password to order.  Once we receive our password, we will be able to order from the on-line catalog.  We will update you on what has been ordered in the next newsletter. A big "thank you" to everyone who sent in Pepsi Notes. An extra "thank you" to Robin Cole who called all the grocery stores to ask about putting collections cans in the stores.

Babes in Arms
"We'll cheat and gouge.  We will punch in the clinches.  We will hit below the belt.  We will show Fleming what clean healthy American girls and boys are made of.  We'll fight." So says Susie, along with the other teenage apprentices at the Surf and Sand Playhouse.  The group is working double time to fulfill their duties as apprentices and produce a revue composed by Valentine White, the leader of the group and aspiring musician.
The only thing keeping them from performing their revue is the strict co-owner of the
playhouse, Seymour Fleming.  The only support they get is from the other owner of the
playhouse, the "unlady-like" Bunny.  Bunny, however, is about to lose her share of the
playhouse due to a severe lack of funds.  In fact, the revue is being put on for the sole
purpose of saving Bunny's share of the playhouse.
Meanwhile, all of Fleming's efforts are going towards the production of the less than Broadway quality play, "The Deep North," written, directed, and starring Lee Calhoun, the "super-Southern" angry man with an inflated head.  The play also stars the much-adored movie star, Jennifer Owen, whose life managed by her mother, Phyllis Owen.
Of course, what would a musical be without romance?  When Jennifer arrives, Valentine instantly falls in love with her, much to the jealousy of Susie, who is very much in love with White herself.  Then there are Terry and Gus, apprentices who engage in a constant love battle.
Filled with hilarious scenarios and beautiful songs, Babes in Arms combines love and laughter and lots other things in a fun show.
Rodgers and Hart wrote many songs for this hit Broadway show including Where or When, My Funny Valentine, Johnny One Note, and The Lady is a Tramp.
