Trip Wrap-Up

The Macy's trip is now behind us. Everyone seemed to have a good time, and the band was fabulous.

During her night to stay up all night, chaperone Karen Korn took time to write a poem, which we present here for your enjoyment.

'Twas the night before Macy's

'Twas the night before Macy's when all thru the hall
The overnight chaperones were having a ball.
The band was all nestled all snug in their beds
While visions of Herald Square marched in their heads.
Ms. Stockhouse in her 'kerchief and Mr. Wilson in his cap
   (in seperate rooms of course)
Had just settled down for a short night's nap.
Then from room 314 or 240 or 310 or 304 or 242 there arose such a clatter
I sprang from my post to see what was the matter.
The two in the hallway, creeping like mice,
Spoke softly, sincerely "We're looking for ice."
The elevators from the lobby of the Marriot hotel
Were free of our youth with their hair mousse and gel.
The wake up crew knocked on the doors before two
They were answered promptly by students asking "May we help you?"
Dressed in their uniforms, inspected and pinned
We left the hotel in the dark without wind.
With a band director who has press appeal
And a travel consultant to give us the spiel
Our guard looked so sharp in their silver and black
As did the band from the front to the back.
The twirler she sparkled. The banner carriers shone.
The band and the guard had their marching skills honed.
The oohs and the aahs that were heard from the crowd
Provided excitement as they shouted out loud,
"Look, clarinets, flutes, trumpets, trombones!
My, low brass and winds, percussion, saxophones!
To the Macy's Parade, to the Herald Square show
Why look at the flags! Did you see the twirler's throw!"
They marched the parade from the park to the square.
Their corners went smoothly. Their sound filled the air.
But I heard them exclaim as buses rolled home Thursday night
Give me three days of sleep and I'll be alright.

Karen Korn (with apologies to Mr. Clement C. Moore)

Trip Itinerary

The Macy's trip will run from November 23 through November 28 and follow the rough itinerary below.

Nov 23 (Sunday)Depart for overnight bus ride
Nov 24 (Monday)Arrive NYC; stop at hotel to unload and freshen up; sightseeing
Nov 25 (Tuesday)Sightseeing
Nov 26 (Wednesday)Rehearsal and Sightseeing
Nov 27 (Thursday)Parade and Thanksgiving Dinner; depart for home
Nov 28 (Friday)Arrive back in Bloomington late morning

Sightseeing possibilities include:

The parade consists of a street parade, approximately two and one-half miles in length, originating from 77th Street and Central Park West. It starts at 9am and proceeds down Central Park West to Columbus Circle, where it shifts over to Broadway. At Macy's Herald Square, NBC televises its three-hour network spectacular seen coast to coast to an estimated 75 million viewers.

Food during the four days in New York would be a combination of prearranged restaurants, buffets, and/or pre-selected menus. In some instances, money will be given out for a variety of meal options, rather than a pre-determined restaurant.

Accommodations will include some very nice first-class rooms in quality hotels, with four students to a room. Adults will stay two per room.

Trip Costs

Trip cost will be $475, due on or before the following trip payment dates:

May 2 (extended to June 10)$150
July 1$150
Oct. 1$175

For the new freshman families, the first payment will be due on Orientation Night, April 29th, instead of May 2nd.

The first, nonrefundable payment commits your participation, as we need to have accurate counts to fulfill our financial obligations with the touring company. Checks should be made payable to BHSN Band Boosters. Please mail your payments to: Maggi Schuman, 313 Reisner Drive, Bloomington, IN 47401. Please note the name of your child on the check or in correspondence to have the payment credited correctly.

The trip is all-inclusive, with the exception of optional Broadway shows, ballet, or symphony concerts which your student may wish to attend. And, of course, you should budget spending money for souvenirs and mementos of the trip.

See fundraisers above for opportunities to earn money to help pay for the trip.

We will have a limited number of scholarships available for this trip. If you are interested, an application form will be available in the band office.

Wanna Help Campaign

This is a simple, low-effort fundraiser and awareness-building campaign to help our Marching Cougars get the most out of the Macy's parade experience. The basic idea is very simple: by making and wearing a Macy's pin, or posting a door sign where you work, or making and wearing a Macy's fundraising T-shirt in your everyday activities, people around you get inspired to support the band and guard, and we defray the cost of this trip with community support.

The theme of "Wanna help?" refers to two concepts at the same time: people helping with projects and labor (both students and Boosters), and community support in the way of donations to help us get to Macy's. We are using the theme across a wide variety of projects and fundraisers so this ties the whole Macy's effort together and creates instant "name recognition" in the community.

We have created as well a simple instant receipt book which you can carry in pocket or purse so that people who want to make donations on-the-spot can do so. The receipt has all the information needed for an IRS deduction on donors' taxes.

DOWNLOADING IMAGES: To download the images (see below) from the website (Windows instructions)

  1. right click on the thumbnail images
  2. select "Save Target As" (if you select "Save Picture As" in most browsers it will download the small thumbnail, which is a very reduced resolution version of the whole image, and will look bad when you blow it up).
  3. change the filename extension from ".jpe" to ".jpg" (needed in some broswer settings; if it already shows as a ".jpg" then this renaming isn't needed).
  4. select where you want the images to be saved (Desktop, temp folder, etc.)
  5. click "OK" and let the file download

PRINTING IMAGES: These are .jpg images which can be opened in any photo viewer and printed full-size. They can also be imported into any graphics design software you might have. Then, you can stretch and resize as you wish to fit other sizes of buttons, etc.

Always do a quick test print first to make sure the size is what you want. Check the button size especially. Printer software varies from brand to brand so I can't give specific instructions for your software. Some printer setup software uses a scaling number you can vary from a few percent to many 100's of percent (zooming).

BUTTONS: The buttons look best printed on photo paper using the "best" selection. They are sized for the 3.6" button which Hobby Lobby carries. Michaels carries a 3.5" button, and both stores carry other sizes as well. Scale as needed. To cut out a button image, use the clear pop-in part of the 2-part button as a guide so that the button is centered and parts are not cut off. They will look fine on good quality white paper if you don't have photo paper.

T-SHIRT: T-Shirt transfers are widely available for under $10 a package from KMart, WalMart, Office Depot, Staples, craft stores, and lots of other places. They are really easy and fun to work with. Look in the store area which has computer papers, labels, etc. Use the cold peel process T-shirt transfers for best results. Every brand varies somewhat; be sure to follow the packaged instructions. These transfers only look "normal" on light or white T-shirts. Light yellow, blue, pink, and so on will probably look just fine. But dark T-shirts will tend to distort the colors and make things look weird. Hobby Lobby carries a special dark transfer, but I have no experience with this. In general, it's always best to try this T-shirt transfer process on something like an old cotton pillowcase or old shirt, if you've never done it before.

(optional) There is also a BHSN text logo which you could download as a second iron-on and place this above the "Wanna help?" logo. Just be sure to space it far enough above that the iron doesn't contact the logo you already transferred on. The direct heat without the transfer paper to protect it may melt the first image you transferred.

"Marketing tip": I like the "Wanna help?" logo by itself because it leaves a little bit of obvious mystery--WHO is going to Macy's? This makes people stop and ask you about the shirt, and now you can tell them the BHSN marching band and guard story. Their curiousity just kinda draws them in. On the other hand, having the Cougar text above makes the story complete and people can decide right away whether they want to help in some way. It is more text to read, though, and takes a second or two longer as you're walking through a crowded store.

By the way, T-shirt transfer instructions always remind you to be sure to leave a small margin around the edge of the image. This margin is already built-in if you print full sized, but if you are pasting these images into other work or enlarging them, keep this margin in mind.

Finally, you can also "shrink" the image in your photo/design program and make a small version which is ironed on off-center sort of like golf shirt logos and such. I like the nice big 8 1/2" X 11" to get the message out, but be creative.

DOOR SIGN: Just print full size in "Good" or "Best" (more vibrant color) mode on your printer and that's about it. Fill in the blank to tell people where they can make donations.

TAKING DONATIONS: We have worked up a simple receipt book so that people who stop you and ask about donating can get a receipt for tax purposes. Just provide your name and mailing address and a receipt book will be mailed to you. The receipt books are checked out in your name and should be returned along with any money you collect. The 2-part forms allow for us to keep a record of who has donated. Money and receipt books should be brought to Macy's meetings to turn in.
