News Roundup 9/19/13

Here are a few short news items from the last few months...

This year's Band Booster officers are Mark Bisesi -President, Janis Parker -VP, Tania Gardner -Treasurer, and Lisa Ensman - Secretary. Student Accounts have been taken over by Moira Wedekind. See the full list of lead volunteers on the website under Boosters-Leadership/Contacts.

For 2013-14, we need $74-79,000 to cover guard, marching, jazz, and concert band expenses. So far, $21,000 has come from marching band fees, and the March-a-thon has raised more than $19,000! The Cook Celebration catering job brought in $5600 and the Opie Taylor's Dine to Donate night $250, including a donation from the restaurant. The Guard earned $1100 from their rummage sale in July. Check the Band Booster minutes for more details on the budget. Fundraising events to come include the Patron Drive, the Swing Dance, and the ISSMA Solo & Ensemble Festival.

There will be no Band Booster dues this year. (In the past, each band family was asked to pay $25.) Hopefully, everyone will donate what they can to the March-a-thon and/or Patron Drive instead.

Tuxes for the upper-level concert bands will be fit in October during band classes. Nedra's has donated new (to us) tux jackets, pants, and shirts, so there's no need to buy your own shirt this year!

Check the website calendar for changes to concert dates, etc. There have been some updates. Be sure to mouse-over events to get more details.

Also, watch the website for new pictures! More will be added after every competition. We'd love to get more contributions, so please ask for a login to upload on your own or just email photos to lisa.ensman at gmail.com.

Hope to see all you parents at the next Booster meeting!

Go Cougar Band!

Marching Band Begins - Important Info

Marching band rehearsals start July 24!

From July 24 to 26, new marchers (and section leaders) should report at 1:45. There will be a break from 5 to 6, during which students can hang out and eat a sack lunch or go out to eat (provide your own transportation). Veteran marchers should report at 5:45, after eating dinner at home. Be sure to bring a water jug, sunscreen, brimmed hat, comfortable and supportive shoes, a 3-ring binder and sheet protectors, every day.

Band Camp will be July 29 - August 2 - 9am to 9pm Monday through Thursday and 3 to 9 on Friday. During Band Camp week, bring your own lunch. This year, the BHSN Campus will be closed for lunch, which means no one is permitted to leave the school during the lunch break. Be sure to eat a good breakfast before leaving home also. Dinner will provided to all of our students and staff every night during Band Camp. The Band Boosters (i.e., parents), led by the Drum Major's parents, will prepare and serve homemade meals Monday through Thursday that week, and order in pizza on Friday. Families will contribute desserts according to the students' sections (see below).

Participating in marching band means lots of trips back and forth to BHSN. For many families, this is painful if not impossible. Consider helping each other out, as well as the environment, by joining a carpool. To facilitate this, there is a webpage where you can mark your location and list your contact information. Look for "Carpooling" on the home page under "Quick Links." Check back often to see if new people have expressed interest - signups will probably be ongoing through the first month or two.

Band Camp dinners:

As you can imagine, feeding over 100 every day will take quite a bit of preparation and help from you. Therefore we are asking for volunteers as follows:

Monday - Thursday:

  • 3:00-5:00pm Final Meal Preparation (need 3 parents)
  • 4:00-6:00pm Cafeteria Set-Up and Serve (need 4 parents)
  • 5:00-7:00pm Clean-up (need 3 parents)

Friday:

  • 5:00-7:00pm Cafeteria Set-Up, Serve and Clean Up (need 4 parents)

If your availability differs from above, no problem. Can only help for an hour? Great! Want to help the entire time? Please do so! Just one day? Fine! This is a great way (especially for first year parents) to get to know the students, the program, and other parents. We are a fun group! Just reply to this email with your interest and availability.

Moms Tanja Bisesi and Shelli Heishman have graciously offered to prepare the main entrée every day. If anyone would like to help with the rest of the predetermined menu, just drop me a line and we'll gratefully accept your time and talent! We will have vegan and vegetarian options available daily as well.

We will continue the tradition of parents providing desserts each day. In addition, large containers of powdered drink mixes (ie. lemonade, Gatorade, Kool-Aid, etc.) will be most welcome! And cases of water bottles will never be turned down!

The Schedule for Dessert/Drink Donations is as follows:

  • Monday - Color Guard
  • Tuesday - Flutes and Clarinets
  • Wednesday - Saxes and Trumpets
  • Thursday - Low Brass, Percussion and Front Ensemble (Pit)

Anyone wanting to donate other food items are welcome to do so and will be a bonus for the students. Think granola bars, protein bars, icee pops, apples, oranges, bananas, etc. Any food donated will be made available in addition to our planned menu, and to the few who were unable to eat a good breakfast. Our students are wonderful, hard-working, dedicated and talented marchers and we want them to be nourished so they can keep up with their grueling schedule.

There will be a table in the Band Room where all donations can be delivered each morning.

On behalf of the BHSN Band Boosters, thank you in advance for your involvement and enthusiasm. Our kids are very deserving, and really do appreciate our support!

I look forward to hearing from you soon. If you have any other ideas, just "holla".

Enthusiastically,

Janis Cooper Parker (Drum Major Mom)
