What is it?

This is a non-competitive festival. Emphasis is on giving bands and combos the opportunity to perform and to be critiqued by professional jazz educators.

Who will be critiquing the bands?

Professors David Baker, Steve Houghton, Pat Harbison, Luke Gillespie, Lissa May, and Tom Walsh will serve as clinicians.

How will we be recognized?

Outstanding student soloists will be recognized via talent citations and various summer jazz camp scholarships.

What about the Final Concert?

This year's guest artist will be internationally renowned jazz drummer, percussionist, clinician, author, and educator Steve Houghton. Houghton has performed with Woody Herman, Clay Jenkins, Toots Thielemans, Christian McBride, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Freddie Hubbard, Lyle Mays, Billy Childs, Pat LaBarbara, Arturo Sandoval, Joe Henderson, and Karrin Allysonand with Maureen McGovern, with whom he tours today. He has recently accepted an appointment as associate professor of jazz and percussion at Indiana University, and is also on the faculty of the Henry Mancini Institute. Houghton will be the featured soloist at the Jazz Fests final concert, performing with the Indiana University Jazz Ensemble, directed by David Baker.
