Jazz Bands Update

WOW !! All 4 of Bloomington North’s Jazz Bands turned in exceptional performances at the beginning of March! On Friday, March 3, Jazz Bands 3 & 4 participated in the ISSMA Jazz Festival. Both bands received Gold ratings With Distinction (especially high scores). Outstanding soloist awards were presented to Eli Jackson (guitar), Zay Bird (tenor sax), Tristan Krieger (trombone), Ace Lee (bass), Kate Thies (tenor sax), and Jaxson Harris (2 awards - baritone sax).

Dimensions in Jazz Concert - March 4th

And on Saturday, March 4, Jazz Bands 1 & 2 plus 3 BHSN Combos performed at the 50th Annual Ball State Jazz Festival. Every group played up to its potential with Advanced Jazz being named Honor Band in Sursa Hall and Leo Messier’s trio named Runner-Up in the combo hall. Follow the link above for a nice video of Adv. Students receiving soloist awards in Sursa Hall were: Elvin DeBruicker (best saxophonist), Leo Messier (best guitarist/pianist), Molly Johnson (best drummer), Declan Dougan (Frank Mantooth Award for outstanding musicianship), and Cedric Brown received a $425 scholarship to the Butler University Summer Jazz Camp. Congratulations to ALL of our student jazz musicians!

Honors from Purdue Jazz Fest

Bloomington North’s Jazz Bands and individual musicians came home from the Purdue Jazz Festival on January 21st with multiple outstanding honors:

  • Advanced Jazz Band earned the 1st place trophy in the top performance hall.
  • Studio Jazz Band earned 2nd place in the #2 band hall.
  • And the BHSN trio comprised of Leo Messier, Noah Smith, and Molly Johnson earned 2nd place in the highly competitive combo room.
  • Leo also earned Outstanding Soloist plaques plus a scholarship for his musicianship in both the combo and big band performances.
  • Also earning recognition were:  Elvin DeBruicker, Cedric Brown, Gabe North, Ace Lee, and Parker Bennett.
