What is it?
The Spring Fling Swing Dance is a fundraiser for the BHSN Band Program. It features live dance music provided by our four amazing jazz bands, plus the TriNorth Jazz Band. The music is energetic with a great beat - think “big band” music from the likes of Benny Goodman, Glen Miller, and Duke Ellington. There are delicious desserts and drinks for sale. This is not just a band event or a student dance - we hope to see people of all ages and affiliations from throughout the community.
Pictures from previous years can be found under Albums and Jazz Bands.
No excuses:
Don’t know how to swing dance? Don’t worry, the evening will begin with a free dance lesson. (Students can also attend a dance lesson tutorial.) Looks too difficult? Feel free to dance however you want! Many people do. You don’t have a date/dance partner? Singles and groups of friends will have a great time too. If you don’t dance at all, you’re welcome to just sit at a table and tap your feet to the catchy beats while enjoying a yummy dessert!
Tickets:
$15 for adults, $10 for ages 18 and under, $40 maximum for a family. Buy in advance from any jazz band member or at the door (cash or checks payable to BHSN Band Boosters).
Bring extra cash for mocktails and desserts!
Location: the BHSN “Ballroom” (aka the cafeteria) - 3901 North Kinser Pike
To get an early start on learning to dance:
— Check Google for dance lesson videos - search for Swing Dance, East and West Coast Swing, Jitterbug, and Lindy Hop
— Here’s one video with slightly more advanced basic figures
— Take a look at advanced dancers in the days of black and white TV and movies!
— This book has a lot of good information. It lets you click to look inside.
Period clothing:
The theme for the party is a 40’s Jazz Club. There’s no need to come in costume, but we hope many of you do. Have fun with it! Here are some webpage with ideas:
— 1940’s swing dance clothing
— more swing dresses
— fads and fashions in the 1940’s
— makeup, hair, and clothing
The most important advice we can give the ladies is NO HIGH HEELS or PLATFORM SHOES. That’s a broken ankle waiting to happen. Comfort is the key for those fast moving feet.
Volunteering:
We need lots of volunteers from band families! Jazz band students will be asked to help setup and/or cleanup. They can also sign up for specific jobs but we do need parents to fill most of those positions. The signup sheet will soon be on SignupGenius.com. (You do not need to create an account; they don’t send you junk mail; all you need to submit is your name and email address.) If you’d like to volunteer but the shifts don’t fit your schedule or you have other concerns, just send a note to Janis Parker, the Spring Fling chairperson, at redstepjcp@aol.com. Thank you so much!
